Maker's notes

Ben Bodman is a chef, farmer and knifemaker.

He began by converting a 50 gallon oil drum into a coal forge, before knifemaking and working at L'Enclume. Today Bodman Blades is run out of a workshop on the family farm.

Given that we both have roots in farming, this collaboration is born out of a shared love of food, British craftsmanship and making the most out of every millimetre of steel, leather and in this case, antler.

Together we have made a deer antler handle Santoku knife. It comes with a handstitched deer leather sheath with deer antler pin closure.

It is a collaboration that came together like all the best dishes. Using simple ingredients, handled with care and consideration, in a way that is designed to show off all their best natural characteristics.

The knife is made from Damasteel, widely considered to be the best knifemaking steel there is. As a stainless steel it is less prone to rusting and retains its edge longer than a carbon steel.

The beautiful pattern on the blade of the knife itself is revealed when the two steels used to make the knife are stacked together, ground, polished and submerged in acid. For this knife the pattern is known as 'Bjorkman's Twist' named after the Swedish bladesmith who created it.

The sheath is made from our deer leather. Sourced, tanned and made in Britain. It has contrast hand-stitching, designed to complement the antler, and polished antler pin closure.
